We had the pleasure of sitting down with Sarah Hull, an Independent Family Law Consultant who handles Family Law matters on a consultancy basis for us.

    Q&A with Sarah Hull

With extensive experience and a deep understanding of her field, Sarah brings invaluable expertise to navigating the complexities of Family Law, particularly as they apply to current and former military personnel, as well as service leavers.

In this interview, Sarah shares her insights on the unique challenges military families may face and how Family Law can impact them during significant transitions.

    Name

    Sarah Hull

    Job Title

    Consultant Solicitor, Family Law

Do you have a personal or family background in the military/forces?

While I do not personally have a background in the military or armed forces, I deeply respect and appreciate the unique challenges faced by individuals and families in these roles.

My focus is always on understanding my clients’ specific circumstances, including the pressures and nuances that military life can bring to situations like separation or divorce.

What are the most commonly-asked legal questions relating to matters regarding separation?

    Clients often ask:

    • How are financial assets divided? Understanding how property, pensions, and savings are allocated is a primary concern.
    • What are my rights regarding my children? Parents frequently want to know how custody arrangements and contact schedules are determined.
    • Will I have to pay spousal maintenance? Clarity on obligations to a former spouse is a recurring topic.
    • How long will the process take? Managing expectations around timelines is key to reducing stress.

These questions are natural, and I strive to provide clear, tailored advice to address them.

Will I be required to physically attend court at any point during proceedings?

Not necessarily. Many cases can be resolved without requiring court appearances, especially if agreements can be reached through mediation or negotiation.

However, if disputes persist, attending court may become necessary. In such instances, I ensure my clients feel well-prepared and supported throughout the process.

Is my Solicitor able to offer any other form of support, or signpost me to additional help if needed?

Absolutely. Beyond legal expertise, I can connect clients with a network of professionals for emotional, financial, or practical support.

This might include counsellors, financial advisors, or organisations specialising in co-parenting. Ensuring clients have access to a holistic support system is integral to my approach.

Can you debunk a common myth about the legal system relating to the separation process?

One prevalent myth is that the legal system inherently favours the wife when dividing assets or determining custody. In reality, the law aims to achieve fairness by considering the needs of both parties and any children involved.

While outcomes can vary depending on individual circumstances, assuming a fixed bias can lead to unnecessary defeatism or conflict. Engaging skilled representation ensures your case is presented fairly and your rights are protected.
