Does Richard Hammond Need To Look Out For These Hard To Spot Head Injury Symptoms?

Home » News & Knowledge » Does Richard Hammond Need To Look Out For These Hard To Spot Head Injury Symptoms?

Richard Hammond makes the news again for suffering a motorcycle accident whilst filming for his upcoming show ‘The Grand Tour’. If you think back to 2006, Hammond suffered life-threatening head injuries following a high-speed crash whilst filming BBC’s Top Gear.

Luckily for Richard, his family, friends and fans, it seems to have been a fairly minor incident. For more information visit this article on the BBC website

Even though it appears Richard’s escaped lasting damage, we would like to highlight that even minor head injuries can cause damage that can have far reaching consequences. Someone involved in a road accident, for example, can walk away feeling fine but the true consequences are only felt later.

The concept of Diffuse Axonal Injury is a hotly debated injury within the Personal Injury field. On a very basic level, the theory is that where there is a rapid acceleration and deceleration, the brain ‘bashes’ against the inside of the skull and can damage nerves and cells within the brain.  The damage is so subtle that it is not always visible on CT and MRI scans. To make it more worrying, some people are not even aware they have a brain injury as there may be no external signs (such as a  bleeding head wound) and they may have lost consciousness for a short period after the crash.Signs to watch out for can include:-

    • Loss of consciousness (even if it is only for a few minutes)
    • Blurred vision and/or vision disturbance
    • Confusion
    • Dizziness
    • Nausea and/or vomiting
    • There may not actually be a visible head injury

If you have been in an accident and start suffering from fatigue (mental and/or physical ), irritability or mood swings, memory problems these can be signs of an underlying brain trauma. In the first instance please seek medical attention immediately.

Oakwood Solicitors have experience at dealing with Road Traffic Accidents, from the minor to the life-changing and catastrophic. We can guide you through the claims process, from start to finish.
