Scaffolder Firm Sentenced after Worker Plunged to His Death

The scaffolding firm based in Atherton S&S Scaffolding Ltd have been ordered to pay fines and costs of over £100000 after an employee died after falling through a warehouse roof.
Tony Causby 42 from Leigh was taking apart the scaffolding when he stepped onto a skylight and fell through.
S&S Scaffolding Ltd were prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) because of serious safety breaches after an investigation into the incident where Mr Causby died on 14 December 2010.
Despite him being a labourer Mr Causby helped put up the scaffolding at the end of October in order to replace damaged guttering and cladding on the roof. He went back to the site on the 14th of December with his colleagues to dismantle the scaffolding Liverpool Crown Court heard.
Mr Causby returned to the roof after his lunch break and stepped on the skylight which broke and he fell through. After being taken to the hospital he was pronounced dead.
The court was told that the company had failed to arrange for covers to be put on the 80 skylights near to where employees were walking which would prevent people falling through.
The company pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. The company of Arley Way in Atherton Greater Manchester had to pay a fine of £75000 and were ordered to pay prosecution costs of £31517.
