Clinical negligence maternity care mistake claims cost Sheffield hospitals’ over £8million in 2012 NHS figures have shown.
The figures have been revealed in an official report by the National Audit Office which showed that hospitals have to pay nearly £700 for clinical negligence for every birth in England.
Last year, the Sheffield trust had 12 claims made against them because of maternity care errors.
In 2012/13 claims against obstetrics treatment at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust cost the trust £5.2m.
Also £3.3m in compensation and legal expenses was paid in compensation through a scheme that had dealt with claims before 1995.
Chris Morley the deputy chief nurse at the trust said that over the past year the cost has reduced.
Across the country there has been an 80% rise in obstetrics-related claims over half a decade according to the audit report. £482m was the cost of cover last year and £277000 was the average payment per claim.
The health service in English paid out over £3bn in compensation claims related to maternity care between 2000 and 2010 according to the NHS Litigation Authority which published the Sheffield figures.
