Spire Healthcare‘s Leeds hospital has launched an investigation into one of its surgeons after major concerns come to light over treatment of dozens of its patients.
Just under fifty patients of the two-hundred patients reviewed have been recalled after shoulder surgeon, Mike Walsh, was suspended in 2018 following raised concerns about his practices.
A spokesman for Spire said:
“Where we have identified concerns about the care a patient received, we have invited the patient to an appointment with an independent surgeon to review their treatment. This is a complex case and the review is ongoing.
“After concerns were raised about Mr. Walsh, an investigation was started in April 2018, and he was suspended immediately. “Spire reiterates its sincere apologies to those patients who have been affected by the treatment they received from Mr. Walsh.”
Spire stated that its findings have been passed onto the Care Quality Commission and the General Medical Council. The GMC confirmed that Mr. Walsh was still on the medical register, though didn’t have a licence to practice currently, with his full registration lapsing at the start of 2019.
Spire Healthcare previously had surgeon Ian Paterson working at its Birmingham practice, who later went on to be handed a twenty-year prison sentence for seventeen counts of wounding patients with intent.
A further Surgeon, Mr. Dixon, from the Bristol practice remains under investigation and has restrictions upon his licence to practice.
