According to reports, there has been a 154% increase in Google searches of the phrase “I want a divorce” as couples find themselves involuntarily trapped together in isolation. According to family solicitor Penningtons Manches, requests have also been received from highly wealthy clients who are now willing to push for divorce even in light of financial losses being highly likely.
A solicitor from the firm stated:
“For many, their enquiries are to divorce now while their asset base is lowered and before the markets bounce back. This is particularly attractive to those whose divorce was a matter of timing and it is opportunistic for them to finalise a financial settlement on divorce if they think their non-cash assets, such as a business or shares, may be managed back to value post-crisis.”

In response to the ballooning number of requests about divorce as people begin to do their research, it is expected that the number of people translating such enquiries to their own solicitors will follow if the current Governmental guidelines endure.
Home-schooling responsibilities, coupled with sharing a workspace in the home and financial hardships are all likely factors, and many relationships that have been just about holding on are being severely tested. This follows a trend seen across the pond in the US, as well as over in China.
A divorce coach, Ms. Davidson, has reported an increase in enquiries also, which she estimates may be as high as 40%. She cites this as coming from people who have been wavering for a while, with the Coronavirus outbreak and quarantine convincing them that they need to make a move.
On a positive note, it can’t be overlooked that this crisis of living space may indeed drive some families closer together in such times, as relatives look towards other members of the family to help out with caring for those who are more vulnerable.
