    What documents should you keep?

During our lifetime we have so much documentation containing our personal details. We frequently sift through the documents and decide which we will keep and which we will shred.

We must, however, think about the information we need to keep when moving towards a paperless society as the majority of our bank statements and utility bills are now online or stored in the ‘cloud’.

So what physical paperwork should we keep alongside our Will or Lasting Power of Attorney? Whether this be in your own filing system or stored with your original documents we want to ensure your Attorneys or Executors have all the information to hand when needed.

We at Oakwood Solicitors have put together a non-exhaustive list of the documents that may be needed in the future:

    • National Insurance Number
    • NHS number
    • Birth certificate
    • Marriage certificate
    • Decree Absolute
    • Documents relating to a deceased spouse’s estate (death certificate, Grant of Representation, estate accounts)
    • All vehicle documents (V5, MOT, Insurance documents)

In addition, you may wish to make a list of all of the following or have directed where the following are located:

    • All financial documents (name of financial institution & account numbers)
    • Share certificates
    • Utility providers and customer numbers
    • Life insurance policies and policy numbers
    • Pension providers

When making your Will or a Lasting Power of Attorney we can store copies of this information with your original documents so they are easily located should they be required in the future.
