Defective escalators – Accidents in supermarkets

Home » News & Knowledge » Defective escalators – Accidents in supermarkets

We encounter many different kinds of accidents that occur in supermarkets and stores in general (either involving employees or customers).

It is rare, however, to hear of accidents involving defective escalators. They are usually subject to strict maintenance procedures and stores and shops have a high duty of care to ensure they are safe to use and do not pose any danger to people using them.

    Defective escalators

This story, which involves a store in Kota Bhura, shows the dangers of failing to properly adhere to these maintenance routines, or failing to respond to previous incidents. Defective and dangerous escalators can potentially cause life changing injuries. No one would want a visit to a supermarket or shopping mall to result in such serious consequences.

A visit to a supermarket can never be risk free, but owners and occupiers should always do everything they can to keep customers safe. As an experienced paralegal, I have encountered a number of different kinds of accidents in supermarkets.

Many people have been injured when stores have not operated effective cleaning regimes, or failed to identify slip hazards in sufficient time to prevent an accident.

More unusual claims that I have experienced have involved elevators jolting clients violently, causing injuries to the back or spine, equipment such as ladders or storage containers being left in unsuitable positions and colliding with customers and a claim where an employee failed to notice a customer when operating a fork lift (causing a collision).

If you ever suffer an accident in a supermarket or store, always ensure you properly record the accident in an accident book and seek prompt medical treatment.

We are always happy to provide advice and help in any way we can. Always keep alert when shopping for anything that could pose a danger and report it to staff, so they can solve the issue.

Accidents while out shopping are rare, but prevention is always better than cure!  If the worst does happen we are always here to help.
