The BBC reported yesterday that more than half of English maternity units fail consistently to meet safety standards.
The Care Quality Commission notes that 7% of these units are posing a high risk of avoidable harm with a further 48% requiring improvement. Equally the CQC has found that no units were outstanding. This is both worrying and very concerning for the women and children that are under the maternity unit’s care.
To add to this there is a number of safety scandals at maternity units in England. Morecambe Bay, and Shrewsbury and Telford have been investigated with investigations to follow in Kent and Nottingham.
Due to the lack of funding and staffing, the mothers and babies are not getting the care that they deserve. The BBC reports of one mother who sadly lost her child due to the lack of care.
