    Gareth Malone – Tinnitus Diagnosis

For those millions of viewers who sit down to watch the One Show on the BBC and for those that know of the choirmaster Gareth Malone and all the great things he has done over the years, I am sure it came as a surprise to learn, as it did to me last night (16th of June, 2022), of his troubling diagnosis of tinnitus.

Watching the show it became clear that he was suffering with tinnitus following a recent sinus infection which has left him with a constant high pitch tone in ears. It was difficult to watch given Gareth’s clear love of music and it was clear he had a huge fear that this would effect his love of music along with his career.

He went onto explain that Tinnitus, a high pitch buzz, whine, whistle, hum or whatever sound it may be is caused by the damage to the hair cells within your ear. Once damaged these hair cells believe there is a consistent sound being heard in your head and it confuses this by producing a noise which people hear constantly or in some cases intermittently.

Gareth went onto provide statistic that 1 in 8 people will suffer tinnitus during their lifetime and what is frightening for many people there is that there is no cure.

It was explained that there is a ray of home in that technology is advancing in the world of hearing aids. The way in which to deal with the tinnitus is to boost your hearing so that your brain no longer believes there is a deficit which can assist in reducing your perception of tinnitus day to day.

I personally have dealt with over the years a great number of clients who suffer with tinnitus, which has been caused as a result of hearing loss they have sustained through loud noise exposure at work that they should have been protected from.

Gareth went on to reaffirm what is well known that your hearing is precious, and you should do everything you can to protect it from damage to avoid the ill effect of hearing loss and potentially tinnitus.

Here at Oakwood Solicitors, we understand that burden that hearing loss and tinnitus puts on a person. We have a wealth of experience in dealing with clients with these and many other conditions on a daily basis and offer compassion to each client no matter what their injury or condition.

If you have suffered with hearing loss, tinnitus, any mental health or any other injuries which you believe were brought about through exposure to loud noise at work, or in other environment we would be happy to listen and discuss your situation and offer advice on your next steps.

If you need help and support with your hearing loss and tinnitus information can be found here at the British Tinnitus Associations website.
