There has been various coverage in the news recently regarding Risperdal or Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic drug, which has had negative effects on its consumers.
It has recently been reported that the manufacturers of Risperdal, Johnson & Johnson, have been ordered to pay $8 billion in The Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas to a Claimant who had previously been rewarded $680,000 for their failure to warn young men that taking Risperdal could cause them to grow breasts. In this case, the Claimant alleges he developed breasts after being prescribed Risperdal when he was a minor.
The Defendant, Johnson and Johnson, has said the award is ‘grossly disproportionate.’ However, we consider this amount sends a clear message, which could be influential beyond the pond.

Medical practitioners have a responsibility to advise the patient of all of the risks and benefits of medication. This duty extends further insofar as medical practitioners have a responsibility to regularly review patients for known side effects to medication and treat accordingly.
Further, manufacturers of medications have a responsibility to appropriately test for and warn of potential side effects of their drugs. A failure to do so could lead to the license for the medication being withdrawn and legal cases to be brought – particularly if the manufacturer knew of possible side effects and failed to disclose the same.
