Unprecedented NHS disruption after thousands of junior doctors agree to strike

It has recently been reported that tens of thousands of junior doctors have voted for a 72-hour walkout which is expected to hit every county in the country.

The pay row between the NHS staff and the UK Government continues after the Government have failed to meet pay proposals set out by NHS Unions such as BMA (British Medical Association). Junior doctors are “frustrated”, “in despair and angry” at the government for the increasing cuts throughout the service.

    Unprecedented NHS disruption

One service that will be severely impacted is the A&E departments throughout the country who will be left without junior doctors for the 72 hour period. As a result, there will be longer wait times for those in urgent need and an even longer wait time for those with minor injuries waiting for treatment in A&E.

People are extremely unlikely to go untreated for this 72 hour period. Not only will the strike affect the NHS Hospitals throughout the country during the strike, it will have a domino effect on other services, such as waiting lists for surgery in the coming days, weeks and months following it. As waiting lists continue to increase, the lack of junior doctors will only push these back further.

This will likely have a devastating impact on many throughout the country as it will cause delays or lack of treatment for those in serious need, such as cancer patients. Many have turned to private healthcare in recent years due to the increasing wait lists for treatment, but given the worsening cost of living crisis, this isn’t feasible for most in the country.
