Providing ID in Times of Self-Isolation

How can I show proof of my ID due to self-isolation (and social distancing)?

It is a legal requirement for a solicitor to request proof of your identification before accepting instructions to act on your behalf. This is usually either a passport or a driving licence being provided, alongside a utility bill – gas, electricity, water etc.

    Providing ID Self Isolation

This would ordinarily be done in person – either by a trip to our office or during a home visit. Once this is complete, we’re free to represent you and act under your instruction.

Self-isolation is something hardly anyone had to worry about as little as a month ago, but now it has quickly established itself as a part of everyday life. We’ve gone from being social butterflies to hermits in less than a lunar month!

    Procedure for self-isolation

As we’re heading through unprecedented times, our business practices have had to adjust to meet such needs. Our offices are closed to face-to-face meetings with clients so attending the office in person is now out of the question. We have been thinking up new ways to obtain proof of your ID from you and suggest the following:

    • Videoing yourself with ID

If you can record yourself on video via your smartphone with your ID and photograph visible, we can validate your identity accordingly.

    • Photo of your ID

If you can also take a clear photograph of your identification alongside yourself.

    • Photo of Utility Bill/Bank Statement

Lastly, if you could provide clear photographic evidence of your secondary proof of ID (a utility bill or bank statement).

What happens once I’ve got my evidence?

Simply email the above onto us as attachments and we can then complete our verification process and proceed with your matter.

(Please be reminded our offices are closed for client meetings at this time)
