    Risperidone Claim – Case Study

    CASE STUDY BY JADE GLOVER

Our Medical Negligence team has experience of dealing with a particular case, involving a child who was prescribed risperidone (sometimes known as Risperdal).

There are detailed guidelines which are to be followed when prescribing risperidone. These guidelines are set by NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

In the case of risperidone, the guidance not only sets out the volumes and what should be prescribed, but also the requirement for monitoring of:

    • Weight and height (both plotted on a growth chart)
    • Waist and hip measurements
    • Pulse and blood pressure
    • Fasting blood glucose
    • Glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c)
    • Blood lipid and prolactin levels
    • Assessment of any movement disorders
    • Further assessment of nutritional status, diet, and level of physical activity

In this case, it is alleged that the failure to inform the child’s parents of particular risks associated with this medication – plus no monitoring of the above criteria – resulted in the development of irreversible and life-changing side effects for the child, as the prescribed medication was withdrawn from treatment.

For more information about the potential negative effects of risperidone, contact us today to discuss.
