Testicular Cancer Guide – Checking Your Lumps

    10:15, 18/11/2019

Home » News & Knowledge » Testicular Cancer Guide – Checking Your Lumps

A recent survey reveals that, although men on average ‘check’ their testicles seven times a day, 62% of the respondents would not allow a medical professional near them.

The Movember Foundation – an international movement raising awareness of men’s physical and mental health issues – recommends that checks are made once a month to identify any personal abnormalities.

    What are the warning signs?

    • A change in size or shape
    • An unidentified lump
    • Painful when touched

Testicles should be smooth, free from lumps or bumps. Most men have testicles around the same size as each other, though some may have one slightly bigger or hanging slightly lower than the other.

    Are survival rates good?

The thought of finding a cancerous lump may be scary to many, though it’s important to remember that NHS statistics reveal that 98% of men diagnosed are still alive five years after their initial diagnosis.

Cancer Research UK reveals that testicular cancer survival rates are very high, though having it diagnosed as early as possible will always be most desirable.

Contrary to popular belief, testicular cancer is most likely to affect young men between the ages of 15-49.

    How do I check myself?

Movember Foundation urges adolescent boys and men to check their testicles each time they step out of the bath or shower. In knowing oneself, it is easier to identify any changes or anything out of the ordinary for the individual. Follow these steps:

    • In turn, rest a testicle on the palm of your hand.
    • Gently roll each one between the finger and thumb.
    • Look for lumps on the front or side. These may be painless. Swellings and growths should also be noted.
    • Look out for firmness, unusual differences between the two, heaviness or general discomfort.

If you notice any one or more of the above – see your GP.

    How common is testicular cancer?

According to Cancer Research UK, it is considered one of the less-common forms of cancer, with 2,364 new cases reported between 2014-2016 in the UK. Just 1% of cancers in men are testicular tumours, according to NHS figures.

    How is it treated?

In almost all cases, treatment involves surgical removal of the affected testicle. More rarely, chemotherapy or radiotherapy may be an alternative. With a healthy remaining testicle, most men can go on to have children.
