    The Autism Show

I attended the Autism Show in Manchester at the weekend with my 13 year old (who has autism and ADHD) and his Nanny.

I wanted to share our experience as a follow up to the Autism Week articles and Instagram takeover from a few weeks ago.

Not having attended an event like this before, there was a certain degree of apprehension – would it be too bright and loud and overwhelming for my kiddo?

    The Autism Show

As it turned out it had been carefully planned out and the three theatres that were hosting talks from various people and professionals all had earphones on each seat, so sounds were muted, but no information was missed. The colours were also pastel shades and calming, to prevent an assault on the senses.

Every person we met, from the staff at the Arena to the stall holders and key speakers were lovely to a fault. There were quiet rooms spread everywhere, to ensure that breaks could be taken ‘away from the action’ whenever they were needed. It was also lovely to have the opportunity to share experiences with others, who may be having some of the same challenges as us.

There were representatives from equipment providers, therapists, special colleges and schools and ideas for ways to interact and develop skills, such as Lego therapy.  There was also the option to interact with professionals on a one to one basis on certain issues.

The best part for me, however, was some truly inspirational seminars and talks.  I particularly loved a gentleman called Colin from the ADHD Foundation, who communicated some amazing strategies, facts and figures and managed to fit so much into the allocated 40 minutes, the mind was racing.

My son did find the event a little overwhelming and spent a few hours in one of the quiet rooms, but I think he appreciated the chance to see and interact with people who accepted him unquestionably and embraced his uniqueness.

One of the biggest challenges for people on the Spectrum is acceptance and self esteem.  Too often he struggles to hold a conversation for fear he will ‘say the wrong thing’. Saturday was an opportunity to let go of this fear and recognise himself in some of the talks and discussions he listened to and the people he met.

It has given us much to consider and act upon, and has given me a strategy for negotiating the many options available (and tactics to use when doors seemingly slam shut). We’ll definitely be back for more!
